Graduate training taught many of us to treat self-care as the cure for burnout. But a day off doesn't shrink a full caseload or clear a two-week note backlog.
“Breathing exercises don't shrink a 35-client caseload or clear a two-week note backlog.”
When clinicians are forced to carry 30 to 35 high-acuity client hours each week, emotional exhaustion is not a sign of personal weakness—it is the biological consequence of an unsustainable system.
To prevent burnout, we must shift focus from individual resilience to administrative and structural containment: rightsizing caseload capacity, implementing HIPAA-compliant documentation workflows, and setting firm supervisory agreements.
